Ok had an issue with the 1999 discovery2 cranking and discomatt said it was a crank sensor. Replaced crank sensor and the thing cranked right up. Now the issue is I live in Western north Carolina and the cold months are coming. When you try start it when its cold in the morning the engine revs to start and then just shuts off. Around noon when the outside temperatures are warm ot if you go out and start it about every two hours through the night it will start up in the morning. Its like as long as I keep the engine warm there are no problems. I waited last night 5 hours before starting it and it was too cold so here I sit awaiting my magic 12:00 noon that the thing starts. I appreciate all the help you guys gave me with the crank sensor because Land Rover wanted to start replacing door sensors at 400$ each to fix my crank sensor problem. Cold? In North Carolina? Really? How cold is cold?

When was the last time it was tuned up?
What brand and grade of gas are you using?
How dirty is the air filter?
Is your check engine light on and if so what are the codes?

 

It's not throwing any trouble codes?

BTW, how does your rover do on the roads up there in the winter? I'm thinking about renting a place in banner elk for the snowboard season and I'd take my DII...do you need tire chains?

spike, you northerns forget we have mountains down here..steep mountains. My grandma can drive on flat snowy roads..but steep ones are another story.

We dont have mountains, but we do get lots of ice and snow.

My disco 2 has 233,000 miles but engine was replaced at dealership at about 190,000. Could it be the throttle position sensor causing it no to crank when cold. When I say cold I only mean around 32 degrees f. Its not real cold yet. No you will not need tire chains unless the cabin you rent is remote. The roads are very well maintained. Any ideas anyone?? Discomatt do you have an answer for this? YOu fixed the crank sensor problem for me?? Thanks everyone!

 

Sounds like a bad idle control valve.
Start it while it is cold outside and then hold you foot on the gas pedal, if it stays running it is the idle control valve either being dirty or bad.
You can take it off and clean it.

 

Thats the problem it will not start when its cold even with the pedal to the floor. It revs up to 2,000 rpm and then dies. Only when its about 70 degrees outside will it start. Any ideas?
