Cruise Control Issue
I have a 1997 Disco I that has a problem with the cruise. When I set the cruise is will stay on (keep the set speed) then unset itself (cruise light on the switch still on). When I try to reset it (using the steering wheel controls), it won't go on. If I turn it off (using the dash switch) and wait, it will some times work again. I have inspected all the vacuum lines and they are OK. I replaced the cruise computer and vacuum pump. The brake switch seems to be OK. Any ideas what is wrong?
Thanks,
Tim

Time to check and replace the vacuum lines for the cruise control including the one to the switch located on the brake pedal arm.
Pretty common Rover problem with an easy fix.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info. I replaced all the vacuum lines and no change in behavior. The Cruise CPU and air pumpwas also changed about a year ago (due to the same problem). I now suspect the brake senor, but want to hear your expert opinion. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Tim

I too would like to hear about the brake pedal sensor. I replaced my vacum lines with new. The cruise worked for about a week or two then stopped again. I checked my hose connections and they seem fine. I would like know how difficult the pedal switch is to replace.
My 96 stopped working until I fiddled with the brake switch too. It had become slightly unseated in the mounting bracket so that it "thought" the brake pedal was not closing the switch. When I correctly seated the switch in th bracket, Everything worked fine. Cheap fix! I also inspected the switch at the time. Its a relatively cheaply made thing that could easily malfunction. To find out if the switch is at fault, you might disconnect the vacuum hose from it and just plug the hose while you make a test drive. don't forget that the switch is a safty device that will disengage the cruise when you need to stop. Careful!
