I have a small leak after having my Cyl. heads replaced a few months back. Is there a bolt tightening sequence for putting the Cyl. heads on - like on BMW's?

Yes, almost all heads have a tightening sequence. I have a DI so can't tell you what the sequence is for a DII but someone will.

 

This is copied from my RAVE CD. If you are doing the head gaskets I would strongly recomend getting the RAVE CD. Do a search, you can download it free or by it for around ten bucks (sorry don't remember where mine came from.)

Reassembly
1. Fit cylinder head gasket with the word TOP
uppermost.
CAUTION: Gaskets must be fitted dry.
2. Carefully fit cylinder head and locate on
dowels.
3. Lightly lubricate new cylinder head bolt threads
with clean engine oil.



4. Noting that bolts 1, 3 and 5 are longer than the
remainder, fit bolts and tighten in the sequence
shown to 20 Nm (15 lbf.ft) then turn through 90
°, then a further 90 °. CAUTION: Do not
tighten bolts 180 in one operation.
5. Clean the push rods, Lubricate ends of push
rods with clean engine oil, and fit in their
removed order.
6. Clean bases of rocker pillars and mating faces
on cylinder head.
7. Clean contact surfaces on rockers, valves and
push rods.
8. Lubricate contact surfaces and rocker shaft
with clean engine oil.
9. Fit rocker shaft assembly and engage pushrods
l Maximum cylinder head warp = 0.05 mm
(0.002 in).
Note: Cylinder head can be refaced to 0.50
mm (0.02 in) maximum below head height –
See cylinder head overhaul.
10. Fit rocker shaft bolts and progressively tighten
to 40 Nm (30 lbf.ft).
11. Connect ht leads to spark plugs in their correct
fitted order.
12. RH cylinder head: Position alternator
mounting bracket, fit bolts and tighten to 40 Nm
(30 lbf.ft).
13. RH cylinder head: Fit auxiliary drive belt
tensioner.
14. Fit inlet manifold gasket.
+ENGINE - V8, OVERHAUL, Gasket -
inlet manifold.

 

This is great - thanks for the info. I already had the heads put on but don't know if the sequence was done right. I don't know why else it would have a small leak. Once again, thanks for the great info!

 

if you had the head gaskets done, it may seap a little. Watch it, and do something if it continues. It may stop...

Have you ever used any of the "stop leak" products? I have always been afraid of putting something like that into the system. My Russian Indy said not to worry about the leak cause it's small (about the size of a nickel to quarter) and just check it ever so often.

 

I wouldn't do it. The radiators are prone to clogging as it is...Plus, a buddy once bought a car that had that junk in it. It all collected on the top of the thermostat, and it wouldn't let the T-stat open when his wife was driving it. Toast...

 

Also depends on what "stop leak" product is used. Your LR should have Dex-cool in it (the pink stuff) and some stop leak products are specifically designed for the green collant which means it wont "coagulate" in the pink stuff anyway.

I hate leaks, it would annoy me... :-)
