Default ?? on cylinder head removal

While reading this and other forums, I've run across posts about head gasket replacement and removal/replacement and torqueing of the head bolts.

My question is, if I remove the hood/bonnet before attacking the engine, will this provide clearance for the final torque. I've read that either hood removal or engine mount removal (to drop the engine down) is required when doing the two 90 degree torque steps.

You can complete the head torque sequence with the engine on the mounts and the hood in place, but it is tight. I use a 1/2" universal joint on the torque wrench and have never had an issue. Remember to wait about 30 minutes after the initial torque and the first 90 degree twist, then wait about 30 minutes again between the first and last 90 degree twist if using OEM stretch bolts. If using ARP studs just set the torque in the proper sequence and you're done.

I just decided to go with the ARB studs. No guess work there.

I did mine with the hood on and mounts attached. Zero issues.

I believe you may be getting the information about removing the engine mounts confused with removing the transmission. While removing the trans it's somewhat easier to access the upper bell-housing bolts if the engine mounts are removed and you let the engine rest on the axle housing. Not necessary on head gasket replacement.

Removed the hood on our 03 (while removing engine), since it offers better light. Actually, the hood will just about stand straight up if you gentle pull it up with a ratchet strap (hooked to roof rack)...just be careful not to crack the plastic cowl along windshield.

Brian.

Likely not their confusion. I too have read threads here suggesting dropping front of engine needed to get access to rear head bolts and has been in the back of my mind. May be true for those with just a basic HF socket set? Yet to do the HGs on my D2. Removal of hood for more general access/comfort and better lighting an excellent tip since its so easy to do.

I just got started on the head gasket change out, yesterday. Took almost 2 hrs to get the upper intake and one valve cover off. I am going super slow so as not to break anything.
I expected to see the valve train bridged with gunk. Luckily it isn't too bad. ARB studs came in today, so I might have it running again by the end of this week.
