D II: First Things to Do
Hey y'all,
I am the proud new owner of this beaut and am wondering what I should right away to give her a long and healthy life.
I have read through a few posts and found this one:
I don't understand all of them totally so here are my questions:
Cheers
I am the proud new owner of this beaut and am wondering what I should right away to give her a long and healthy life.
I have read through a few posts and found this one:
I created a post a long while back with the typical failure mileage. Lots of first time to-dos, If I was buying it I would immediately replace all the hoses, do the inline thermostat mod, pcv mod, and get religious about checking coolant every saturday. If you want an extra level of security with reliability replace the water pump and radiator and coolant bottle.
Here is my recommended list of first things to do:
Here is my recommended list of first things to do:
- PCV mod to prevent oil leaks
- Inline Thermostat Mod to prevent overheating - check with Jason Feuerstein, he recently did this and was surprised it does not get over 185.
- Replace all original cooling system plastic or rubber components to prevent overheating and head gasket job
- Sunroof leak issues - search my post - prevents headliner issues.
- Coat CPS cover with aluminum foil to prevent CPS failure.
- Remove door panels and lubricate window regulators to prevent common failures.
- Lubricate cargo door handle to prevent rust seizing
- Lubricate door straps to prevent popping
- Coat rear frame to prevent rust
- Remove and coat cowl panel with bedliner spray to prevent UV cracking
- Wax exterior to prevent clearcoat fading
- Lube front driveshaft and/or replace u-joint to prevent failure
- Replace shifter boots - make your own with leather and superglue
- Check idler bearings for wear and replace if necessary
- Sand and recoat fender flares with bedliner.
- What is a PCV mod?
- What is an Inline Thermostat Mod?
Cheers
Take a look at the high mileage maintenance sticky at the top of the D2 forum page, it has a good checklist of things to do (primarily fluids) that you should replace ASAP, especially if the service history of the truck is not known. Honestly th number one thing to do absolutely today is to order an ultragauge and to monitor temperatures.
I would also add that the list of things that is posted at the top of this thread I would put more in to the "good to do when you get around to it" category and not so much in the "top priority" category. Top priorities on these trucks are (in equally important order):
1) Good oil pressure, switch to 15W-40, its a diesel oil but works well with the antiquated Rover V8 design.
2)Engine temperatures, these trucks are prone to overheats while at the same time being very intolerant of overheats. The temp gauge on the dash is useless because it only starts going up after exceeding a certain temperature by which time it's often too late. Get an ultragauge or a scangauge which plugs in to your OBD2 reader and gives you live time temperature readouts so you can see anything funny as it develops. A 180 degree thermostat is recomended but if your temps are OK you can put that lower down on the priority list.
3) A grease-able front driveshaft. The factory front driveshaft is non-serviceable located very close to the catalytic converter and is dripped on by the passenger AC drain, over time these two things destroy the grease in the bearings holding the shaft together. If they go the shaft will disconnect and turn it to a baseball bat putting a hole in to your transfer case. Aftermarket ones with greaseable fittings are available, they are reasonable inexpensive (AB or Lucky8 have them) and can be replaced in the driveway, although I had to bring mine in to a shop because the nuts were rusted solid.
Congrats on the new truck! They are easy to work on which is great because they are broken all the time
An edit, I didn't read the description of the truck until just now, looks like you are in good shape regarding most of the fluids and the front drive shaft (don't forget to grease it with every oil change or so). I'm kind of jealous that yours doesn't have sunroofs, mine lieak like a sieve and I just put a piece of black automotive vinyl on them to seal them up. not that it matters with my roof rack and such- didn't use them anyway.
