D1 Transfer Case
Hello,
Just bought a 96 Disco I with 104,xxx miles and would like to change the transfer case oil. I did a search and there was talk about using a 1/2 inch socket to pull the plug. The only thing I could find that looked like a plug is more like a 19 mm nut. Is this what I'm looking for? I have the rave cd but the picture doesn't really look like my plug.
I am going to use mobil 1 synthetic 80-90, is that also suitable for the front and rear diffs.
Thanks,
Scott

The drain plug is what you saw, the fill plug is what takes a 1/2" rachet. It is the same plug that is on the diffs.
The fill plug is on the top back of the t-case. You will need ahand pump to fill it.
I use 85W-140 in the t-case and the diffs, but the 80W-90 that you are going to use is fine.

Do the D1's have the e-brake cable crossing in front of the fill plug like on my D2? I don't have anything (currently) that will remove the fill plug so I had Cerrone's change the fluid when I had the 3 amigos taken care of. It's something I'd like to do on my own next time. Whenever that will be. I think a 6" flexible extension for the 1/2" driver would work, but I haven't picked one up yet.
I use a 3" extension to break it loose and then once it is backed out enough I remove the extension and use just the rachet untill I can turn it by hand. You can move the e-brake cable off to the side.
For those who dont want to mess with it most quick lubs will do a "4x4" service for $60, both diffs and t-case.

Have not changed my Discovery over to synthetic yet but I'm going to. I did however have Grease Monkey do full synthetic service on the t-case and diffs of my Dodge. That plus a conventional oil change ran me $250. Definitely not the cheapest but they done all the oil changes since the truck was new and I trust them. Last oil change had the Dodge changed to Mobil 1 engine oil. The Discovery is getting all Royal Purple.
