Default D2 2001 using a 2004 engine

Will a 2004 4.6 motor fit in place of the 4.0 motor of a 2001 concerning transmission and computer? I found a good motor for a good price but need to make sure it is a fit in the event I buy it.

Thanks,

Yes, to avoid most of the check engine light error codes from the mismatch of using a 4.6 with your 4.0 computer it would be ideal to swap the computers with the one from the 2004. Be sure to get the ecu, bcu, and instrument cluster or you'll need the Nano comp to turn off the instrument cluster flashing.

If you have a nanocom can you get away with just an ECU from a 4.6? combined with the 03/04 MAF?

No, unfortunately you definitely need the BCU also. Also it is not just the 04 MAF but the entire intake tube from the airbox lid to the upper intake.

I have zero issues running a 2003 4.6 motor in our 1999 Disco 2. Running all 4.0 electronics. I did keep the 2003 starter as it had less than 85,000 miles so that was a no brainier.

I am running the 4.0 timing cover so I could keep the oil cooler.

According to the little lady who drives the disco like she stole it, it's much faster and gets better mpg. This is likely due to the fact that her 4.0 had over 220,xxx miles on it.

It's easy to weld up the head adapters for the SAI so they work as plugs.

We've never had cats in the rig, I use 02 sensor foolers. Makes working under it much easier. Never have had an issue with CELs other than when head gasket coolant was leaking directly onto the bank one #1 o2 sensor, takes them out pretty quickly although a valve cover gasket was probably also helping.

I installed the extinct thermostat and coil pack relocation at that time of engine install.

In theory the 4.6 ECU should get a little more power and a little more mpg out of the set up. If I ever get a nanocom I have the 03 ECU and slabs here (I also did the CDL lock) to program. I've not exactly been in a rush to do so. Some report their 4.6 doesn't feel any faster compared to the 4.0 so it might not be worth while unless you got the ECU for free and have access to the nanocom.

Not quite comparing apples to apples, but my '97 P38 with a 4.6 has significantly more power than my '01 Disco with 4.0

The little lady used to brag about how fast she could get her disco on a small stretch of highway before it turns in into toll road. It was about 75 with the 4.0 up hill before it wouldn't go any faster. The 4.6 would top out at 80 and had more power to go however the 3-4 inch lift caused so much vibration it broke the mounting tabs on the gauge cluster cover. After a heart to heart talk she no longer tried to go that fast. A few pictures of the carnage from a thrown front prop shaft was enough to convince her to stop accelerating when the rig begins to vibrate. I'd blame it on the 285/70/16 mud terrains but we tried two different sets and still developed drivetrain vibes over 75. Tom Woods front prop shaft and 3 different rear drive shaft swaps made no difference. It's not a hang with 90mph traffic vehicle.

No doubt, I feel uneasy anytime it gets over 75.
