detroit locker
Sure, the ETC will not have to work as hard. Make sure if you install a Detroit that you install H.D. axles are you'll break your factory shafts.
By the way, I run a rear Detroit and a front T.T. and that basically shuts the ETC completely, and crawls like a mountain goat.

Mike isn't really around any more. I would say run the stock axles till you break one, then upgrade. I think the strength of the factory axles is underrated. Shade Tree has a Chevy 5.3 in his and runs a Detroit with 4.11s on stock axles. He tells me he isn't afraid of the skinny pedal, either.
I don't think it's necessary to upgrade the D2 axles because the rear axles are stronger than the D1, RRC stock axles. I understand LR made them stronger because they were concerned ETC would add additional stress. I have pictures showing the difference is diameter between the D2 and D1 but can't find it.
Also, the new Detroits don't shock load as hard as the older ones, when they engage. With that said, I upgraded my front and rear axles with Ashcroft axles because money grows on trees.

Yubert: I have quickly noticed how expensive the Ashcroft stuff is. Has me scared straight. I'm upgrading to a CDL and want to add a Detroit rear and Truetrac front at the same time but the axle upgrade parts are about $700. Yikes!
