The location of the frame rails being so close to the sills prevents all of your weight from being on the sills. This design is heavy enough to suppot anything you will come across. If it was frame mounted, it would be extremely heavy to be able to withstand the force if it was just dangling out there.

I have a 99 that has run many of the trails in Death Valley, the High Sierras, most of California's upper desert trails and a lot of Colorado that says you are wrong.
When built right this is all you need.

Im with you Nitetrain, a rock slider that just encloses the sill will crush it easily when you sit 2-1/2 tons of disco on it. Mounted to the chassis or out riggers provides a lot more strength and is easy to do.

UP, can you post a pic of how yours are mounted to the frame? I really can't see how they can be unless you put a couple of bars coming out from the frame... Don't see how they will assist much. Aslo don't see how they weight of the entire vehicle can be put on the sill..

That's what I was thinking, but they only provide lateral protection. I was making the sliders without the ladder rails. With the rails, I drag my pants on them every time the truck is dirty.
