Default Disco 2 help!!!!

Hi all
Tim here from South Africa
New to this forum and am hoping some of the knowledgeable folk can assist. I drive a Disco 2 TD5 2001 model. Recently started hearing a noise from what I assume must be the drive train, bell housing or gearbox. It only starts when I pull off and then quietens down and only happens when the gears are engaged. I never hear it when I disengage the gears, put the clutch in or rev the engine standing. In fact, engine runs smoothly. When I pull off it's either a ringing sound or loud tik tiking (like a washer in a tumble dryer or someone taping a steel plate) and as I accelerate or go into higher gear it quietens down.
Thought it might be gear box oil so topped up and it only needed 400 mls but that didn't work. Cant see anything loose underneath either. Any info or advice would be appreciated coz my landy mechanic tends to follow the process of elimination and that gets rather expensive fast!!! If I can reduce the amount of parts he's gonna want me to buy it would help LOL.
Tim

Have you ever replaced the front drive shaft?
If not, stop driving the car. Even if it is not the problem, it will need to be replaced. But your problem does sound like it could be a front drive shaft failure.

Thanks for that, went and googled it -

Does sound like this but not nearly as bad as the one in the vid - will get that checked first before I start stripping everything.

Most people would agree to be wary of the front drive shaft. Mainly because of the damage it does when it fails.

Do you have the ability to remove it yourself and have a look? Look for grease fittings, how many does it have? if its the original, non serviceable shaft, it wants replacing regardless if thats your issue. The original shaft has all the grease baked out of it, being too close to the cat.

Or tell your mechanic to replace that whatever, and check it out when its off.

edit, thats an amazing video.

Took it for a quick drive around the block with this in mind and it does sound like it could be the problem. Checked under the car and it has two grease nipples - one in front and one at the back. Jiggled it around and it does feel as if there is a bit of play in the universals. Only makes the noise when I accelerate in 1st, 2nd and sometimes in 3rd. Nothing much I can do now until Monday besides put some grease in. Hate this time of year when no one feels like working LOL
Really appreciate the help - was starting to have nightmares about gear box overhauls and oil pump replacement.

Since they are greasable you apparently have a repaired or replaced drive shaft. Definitely keep a schedule of greasing the u-joints. I don't think the TD5 is as bad with heat problems(cat beside driveshaft) as the NAS V8s but someone replaced or updated anyway. The problem you are having may be the center pivot bearing in the double cardon joint. It is relatively difficult to replace compared to the u-joints. It should be greasable, too, upon replacement.
