I was trying to write this on Alex M.'s post that inspired this, but I didn't realize posting on that would end up at the very bottom of the whole list of mods. Now I'm just posting it alone. I liked the idea of a fuel filter other than the sock at the base of the fuel pump, but didn't like the idea of a plastic filter that is rated for carbureted use. The ONLY 12 micron, steel, 1/4" barb inlet/outlet filter I could find was the
. It had a nice snug fit and I haven't had any problems or leaks with the constant tension clamps that came with it.
Location: The best place to add the inline fuel filter is right above the rear axle on the inside of the frame on the passenger side. There will be two hoses up there and it's the top one that needs the filter.
1. I cleaned a little bit down there with some carb cleaner and a stiff bristled brush to avoid getting crud in the lines which this whole project is about. 2. Instead of clamping on the fuel lines which were very very hard to clamp, I just release the fuel pressure in my engine bay with the Schrader valve.
3. Cut the top fuel line with some garden shears. Make sure you’re wearing safety glasses and also can quickly roll away lol.
4. Put the constant tension hose clamps on either side.
5. Install the fuel filter facing the right direction (towards the engine) then put the constant tension hose clamps on it.
6. I zip tied the two hoses together close to the rear frame crossmember to hopefully eliminate any vibrations/rubbing that might take place.
I know Land Rover didn’t include one from the factory, but I figure it can’t hurt if done right (mostly right). My brothers 94 f150 had rust in his tank and the engine side of the fuel filter was clear and the tank side was orange. That was enough to convince me.
That's a nice little upgrade to mine. I no longer recommend the plastic filter either, and I *think* I've edited that post to say as much. I should double check that.
I really like the metal filter there. I would prefer to see screw type hose clamps given the amount of pressure the system sees. I've be afraid of the spring type allowing the line to blow off.
we already have a filter in the fuel pump, no need for this
I only found these two attached quotes in the manual about the filters for the gas engines. I didn't realize that there was a fines filter in the pump when I did this. Though I still like the idea of another filter. I know that my filter comes after the tank filter so if that one clogs then mine wouldn't be of much help, though I like the idea of it. There's no mention of the micron rating of either filter, though I would imagine that LR had a 100 micron coarse filter and a 10 micron fine. I just wanted to make sure that there's an adequate fines filter.
