Default Disco 2 Rolled into ditch now Engine won't start

Hi. I hit a patch of black ice and came off the road ending 3/4 up in a deep ditch full of mud and icy water.

A friendly farmer hauled me upright and out about 3 hours later.

And a pick up towed me to a local garage.

Windscreen gone cab wet and muddy a few dents.

But the TD5 Diesel engine won't turn over.

Is there any point trying..or is it not worth wasting the time effort and expense?

The TD5 has electronic controls, if not inertia switch something could have gotten wet that shouldn't be wet. Only knowing what it is will tell you if it's worth fixing. I suspect it's worth fixing, depending on condition of the vehicle.

If it was upside down for 3 hours, the crankcase oil could (and probably did) leak past the piston rings into the combustion chamber. This would hydraulic lock the engine (liquids can't be compressed). Have the mechanic make sure the engine can be rotated with a wrench. If this is the case, the oil will eventually leak down back into the crankcase but not as fast as when it's hot. The injectors (or glow plugs) can be removed and the engine turned over manually to clear the liquid. If this turns out to be the problem and the shop you took it to didn't think of this, take it somewhere else.

Yeah, I read it as 3/4 over on it's side, but maybe he meant upside down with water 3/4 the way up the rover.

Even if it was a 3/4 roll over if the intake side was in the water when it was righted the water could have gotten into the cylinders and hydro-locked it.

And buy "wont turn over" we are assuming he means he turns the key and the engine will not move, the starter binds and thats all.
If he means the starter does nothing then we are barking up the wrong tree.

you need to prep it now

dry it out totally
change oil
pull injectors and look for water in cylinders

prime the diesel pump if possible
purge air from injector lines

replace affected control ecu's

this will take time and money
