So i have a second battery location in the engine bay of my disco 2 but im
not sure what it does because it doesn’t have a battery in it and it doesn’t have any accessories or locations for accessories so any ideas on what it’s for?

A second battery is typically charged by your alternator through a switch (automatically or manually controlled) called an isolator. When you stop to make camp the switch turns off (or you turn it off) and you can now draw power from the battery without running your main battery down. This does mean you need to have a secondary electrical system rigged up in your vehicle, perhaps the PO took all of those parts? Post a picture and perhaps we can see something.
I’m envious of an “under the hood” solution. My secondary battery is mounted way in the back in the passenger side storage cubby. I know a few aftermarket folks made a secondary battery try a while back but they’ve all gone under as far as I understand. If you don’t want it you could always post it for sale here, I’m sure one one will take a bite at it!
If it's the OEM battery tray, then I feel you're talking about the space behind the battery? If so, this is where the original bottle jack was secured.
I have considered removing the factory battery tray and building a dual battery setup. It's something I would consider selling in a small batch if a few folks were interested.

Rasies hand for being interested. I'm currently running an Optima Red Top with dual posts to account for additional accessories. That physical sized battery leaves a lot of space and I keep eyeing that area for a dual battery set up.
Pretty easy to do. The space is there up front if you rid the jack..
i elected to use a dual battery solenoid isolator system, ( iTHINK the old veteran guru on here Disco Mike went by simply linking them parallel..) which wouldn’t have been more then salvaging a single battery cable from junkyard & some dual terminals..
