Just had this happen today on my daughter's truck - took out the trans hose and the upper shroud but other than that appears to be ok. Weird...

final update. I got my lower fan shroud from eBay finally and installed everything back. It all works great!! Got it done with two days to spare before school starts, so my son can go back and forth to school on his own.

On my ultraguage running temp has dropped from 194 running to around 188-190 and from 199 idling to 197 idling. Not a huge difference in temps, but nevertheless in the right direction. My cooling system should hopefully be set for a long time.

Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Update from my side as well - as I mentioned same thing happened to my daughters truck a few days later -took out the rad hose, upper and lower radiator shrouds, and transmission hose. I happen to have two discos currently so I took a look at the fan on the other one - blade was cracked and center support almost fell apart when I took it apart to replace it. - see attached photos

I think it must be a fatigue failure issue with high mileage trucks - recommend Mods make this a sticky as I am guessing they will all fail in this manner at some point.

What kind of mileage are both of you talking about on these trucks with failing fan plastic?

potxoli ive got a 99d2 4.0 and the fan just exploded on mine also but I had a new water pump and also a new fan clutch and fan so I believe its just luck of the draw when your dealing with cheaply made plastic parts
.ours put a dent in the hood took out the maf didn't harm the radiator thank goodness but I am having issues finding the lower radiator fan shroud I wish I could find new parts but they seem far and few inbetween.best of luck

Try forum members Paul Grant, Abran, or Drillbit if used will do.

I got a used fan shroud from ebay (lower) and from abran (upper). They were in great condition. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I too have a dent in the hood.

On the plus side, the car is driving GREAT since I made this repair. Temps are down a few degrees, nothing is leaking and the engine is humming right along. I hope I didn't jinx it
