Default Disco II Trans Diagnosis

Ijust replaced mytransmission (01' Disco II),due to my front driveshaft putting a hole in the side of the case of my transmission because of a hailed U-joint. When I installed everything and started to test the unit I found out that the CDL had to be engaged due to the fact of not having a front driveshaft and only distributing power to the front of the transfer case where there was the least resistance. So I then locked the CDL (luckily I have a model with the CDL shaft) when I gave in gas in "Drive" there was no forward momentum, I then tried 1,2,3 and Reverse. Gears 1-2 and reverse worked without a hitch but 3rd gear gave me trouble, it grabbed then let go a few feet into it. I spoke with my friend who is a Ford Mechanic and he said most likely it would be a Valve Body malfunction. I have the old transmission sitting in the backyard so an easy swap is possible.

Has anybody ever run into this problem before? Will this fix the "Drive" or 4th gear in the transmission?
