Can anybody tell me the difference between the 03/04 trans and the prior versions?


Are there fitment issues or just performance? Your savoir faire is appreciated.

I think they are all the ZF 4 speed autos, and nothing has changed about them through the D2 years, I could be wrong though.

 

The '99-'02 DII uses the ZF 4HP22 trans mission whereas the '03-'04 models employ the 4HP24 transmission. The change was made to the 24 to accommodate the 4.6 increase in power. This occurred in the GEMS P38a as well and naturally continued right through '02.

The transmission found in DI's, while ZF 4HP22's, are not compatible with those found in DII's because of the change from mechanical to electronic management.

I have never seen a transmission from a P38a, whether it be GEMS or Bosch, successfully repurposed for a DII.

 

I guess I should have also mentioned that the 4HP24 and the 4HP22 are not exactly the same in terms of dimensions. This is why the '03-'04's have front driveshafts with a slightly different length than those found on earlier DII's.
