Default Disco Power Window

My 02 Discos, drivers door power window would not go up. I could hear the motor operating fine the window would go up if you pushed it down by hand and would go back up but not down. I assumed the regulator was bad. I went to the dealer and was told the regulator was $298 plus take, an import parts shop had one for $109, Rock Auto has them for $47.00.

After taking closer look at the mechanism, I saw that the regulator was working fine. The problem was the metal trim piece on the bottom of the drivers door glass rusted out and the rubber trim that grips the window to pull it down came off. So I didn't need a regulator or the motor. I needed to reattach the trim piece to the window.

I removed the two 8mm nuts that fasten the window to the regulator. I put the metal piece in a vice and closed the gap so it would grab the rubber tighter. Then I used a Dremmel tool to grind out as much rust as I could. After grinding out as much as I could, I applied a "rust converter" to keep it from rusting worse.

I picked up some clear JB Weld that was rated for glass. I applied the epoxy to the inside of the metal trough piece to stick the rubber back into it. Then I reinstalled the window trim to the regulator ( 2, 8mm nuts) then I carefully pushed the window back into the trim piece,( make sure it seats properly from end to end). Then use the rest of the clear JB Weld to glue the window glass to the frame. The bottom inch of the window is not visible so put plenty of epoxy on there; running over the glass, the rubber and the metal runner. Let it set for a couple of hours before you use the window and you will be good to go.

You saved a $1000.00, that's what a dealer would charge, $300 for the part, $100 for diagnostics, two or three hours labor for removing the door panel $200-300, maybe a new window for $300 plus all the other costs for plastic fasteners " escuctheons" a new plastic vapour barrier, sales tax plus all the other unneeded repairs they'd try to scare you into purchasing.

Sorry, for not posting photos, could not find my phone while working but it's self explanatory once you get the inner door panel off.

Do yourself and your bank account a favor by checking to see if this is your problem before buying a new regulator.

Beat the system, think outside the box and you will able to enjoy a nice vehicle for little money.

Sounds like you had your hands sticky...

Try the classifieds too.

I just gutted a low-mile rover and threw them away. Wouldnt have cost much to ship.

There are U-pull-it junkyards that have super cheap parts.

Glad it works.
