Each one is a improvement on the previous model.
In theory anyway. The more electronics they put on the trucks the worse they are. More electronics = more niceties but more problems. D1 is far enough along the Rover evolution as I care to go.

In bad shape they go for $10-15k, in great shape $30k+.

And they were only sold here for a couple of years, '95-'97 if I remember right.

Here is one with the 200tdi.

Here is your typical Defender that was sold here in the US.

Now keep in mind that the Defender and the DI are the same truck.

I have been reading up on them lately, in wiki it says they stopped selling them in the US, because laws passed requiring cars to have air bags. So it wasn't really worth it for them to put them in since not many were sold. I didn't know they are the same trucks basically as the D1.

I just like the look of their body style, the one i have in my avatar, dude was selling that for $15,000 euros and its a 94. I don't think you can import them to the US, because of the air bags. More research for me to do lol..

I think any vehicle that predates the airbag requirement can be imported. The emissions issues will be a bigger challenge than whether it has airbags or not when it comes to importing. A 94 Defender here in the states that is in good condition can sell for as much as $40,000. I've seen them in poor shape sell for $20,000.

The only thing I want for my 1996 Discovery would be a larger fuel tank.

The Land Rover diesel of the time was a four cylinder, and though a lot can be done
with diesel motors my VW has 250 ftlbstq and 125 hp more Tq than my Disco we in the US would have had to had a 6 cylinder for towing and the like and none was to
be had at the time.
