Default DiscoII - Will not turn over? XYZ Switch is Bad.

Greeting to all. I have a low mileage D2 (less than 22,000 miles) that will not crank. I can hear three relays that are clicking when the key is turned to the start position. The relays are: one yellow relay under each driver and passenger seat and one yellow relay (window control?) in the fuse box by the driver's seat. Otherwise, no other sounds. Perhaps the starter is bad. Any ideas?

To give more history, yesterday when it was parked for about 30 minutes and then I tried to start it - no luck. I found and replaced a blown fuse (the one that controls the brake interlock at the shifter). I have also noticed that the rear window and front windshield defrosters (the little yellow indicator lights) do not work and everything else electrical appears okay. I can find no other blown fuses in either the engine compartment or in the cab.

Also, about two weeks ago, I "repaired" the xyz (or starter inhibitor) switch on the side of the tranny. Prior to this time, I was periodically getting the Manual Mode and Sport Mode lights indicated and the tranny was going into limp mode. I drilled two holes into the bottom plastic area of the xyz switch and sprayed contact cleaner into it and cycled the shifter. Then I blew dry (with compressed air) the switch and sealed the holes with RTV. Since that time I have not had the lights come on, where as before the "repair" they were coming on several times a day.

Anyhow, could the xyz switch stop the D2 from cranking? Any ideas would be appreciated as I am a long way away from any land rover repair shops.

Thanks!

I forgot to include that it is a 2004 D2.

The battery is less than 2 weeks old and is good. Also, I should add that when the key is rotated to start, most of the interior lights and exterior lights dim greatly as if lots of current is going to the starter.

Move the gear shift to neutral and then try and start it.

Report back.

from the twist the key lights dimming comment i would suggest that you first remove both of the battery connections and clean them with a wire brush make sure the terminals are also cleaned, check the ground wire connection to the chassis and the positive wire to the alternator and the starter

Neutral (N) does not work either. Also, I had earlier removed the battery leads and cleaned them. They are clean and tight.

It sounds like a bad starter, but I dot know how that could be with only 22k on it.
Check all the wires at the starter end too, remove and clean if needed.

Are there anymore fuses or relays that are in the control circuit for the starter? And if so where are they?

Also, do you think there is any bearing to the xyz switch that I "repaired" a couple of weeks ago?

I had a similar problem on a 4runner once.

Removed starter had it rebuilt didn't work so I bought new stared. Everything seemed fine. It was my positive battery terminal. It looked fine but when I removed it to clean it snapped in half
