Default Discovery 2 (TD5) cut out

Hello, I'm new to these forums just wondering if anyone can help me out, my disco 2 cut out last night for no apparent reason. I was driving as normal went past a speed camera and when I put my foot down nothing happened. There was no nocks or bangs coming from the engine and at first I thought the big tyres I'd put on had chewed the diff up. She wouldn't rev above 2k rpm and as soon as I dipped the clutch to drop a gear she stalled on me and when I tried to fire her back up she would barely turn over. Now I had a similar problem in my old discovery and it turned out to be a belt idler which had got hot, expanded, and seized stopping the engine from rotating so after she was recovered home I took the belt off and tried to jump the battery (as we had been stranded on a dark county road with the sideights and the hazards on for about 2 hours) and nothing happened apart from the starter motor clicking, so I charged the battery on the bench and tried again, and she would just barley turn over. Now could this be as simple as a battery that'd given up (but then why would the lights have stayed on so long without dimming) or is something in the engine at fault (but why would we loose all power and stall without hearing any nocks or bangs from the engine), both oil and coolant where at max so I don't believe the engines nipped up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Ted.
