Default Discovery 2 Td5 - New turbo fitted and now it won't start

Hi All.
This all started when I had to replace the water pump. While gaining access to the pump I removed the MAF meter and thought i'd have a quick look at the turbo. The vanes/shaft was floating around like a stick in a bucket of worms..to cut a long story short..replaced the turbo with a new unit (not refurb) and finished replacing the new water pump..reconnected everything and did an oil and filter change and obviously the coolant..as advised elsewhere on this site i removed the R9 relay so I could prime the turbo ..cranked the engine over a few times to make sure oil was getting to the turbo...replaced the R9 relay and that's where the problems started..she won't fire up...no glow-plug/pre-heater light on the dash and now all four indicators continually flashing (pulled the fuse to stop them for the time being)..

Everything was running OK prior to all this.

It's probably something I've over looked but as anyone have any idea what I've done wrong / disturbed or needed to do?..

Many thanks

Not an expert on this small diesel engine, but have ran into a few lower compression makes/models that if the glow-plug system isn't working...they won't start...no matter the temperature. Some have a swirl chamber built into the head, where the glow-plug helps ignite the fuel for initial starting.

I'd go back over everything, and especially see if the glow-plugs are being energized.

Brian.

Just a guess, but four-way flashers make me think of something with the alarm/immobiliser system.

Firstly, please state your vehicle year and mileage then download the RAVE workshop manual.

As a rule the US website here is mostly for V8 petrol engines as the TD5 was never marketed in the US due to various state issues.

Your turbo sounds more like an oil starvation issue as generally they last 500K+ miles so the bearings appear to have expired prematurely.

Did you disconnect the neutral battery strap before removing the relay?
Have you checked the main fuse?
TIP: Avoid fiddling with the MAF as invariably they can be easily damaged.
Did you check the oil flow to the new turbo after the oil change?

IMO you have unconnected issues, mainly electrical. My first approach would be to check the general oil pressure, then recheck all the electrical connections that have been disturbed and finally check all the affected relays and fuses. Your problem sounds more electrical but you have possibly flooded the glow plugs with derv.

TIP: Always remove the battery neutral strap before removing or replacing any electrical component. (ensure you have the radio/sat nav code to hand first)
