Default Discovery II Dyno Test

Has anybody had their Disco 2 dyno tested?
I have a '04 SE and I feel like the 4.6L motor gets more than 217hp.

Thanks.

You're feeling the torque, not the horsepower. You're making ~180-190 in horsepower, but about 260 lb/ft torque (assuming you're stock. Mine was closer to 160 hp and 250 lb/ft torque at the wheels before my rebuild). Mine, hightly modified, makes just above 230 hp and 315 lb/ft torque at the wheels. It also helps that the final drive ratio is pretty low. 3.53 gears if I remember right with a 1.2:1 transfer case ratio, coming out to about 4.24:1 gear ratio. 4th gear is an overdrive .728:1 ratio, so final drive is 3.08:1, but it's essentially got 4.24 gears even though that's not actually the ring and pinion ratio.

It's highly unlikely. Torque can give you the impression of power hence the huge torque used on Paris Dakar cars as opposed to BHP (due to restrictors imposed by the regs). The BHP at the rear wheels will be significantly less than the quoted BHP but you would need to put the engine only on a dyno for actual engine BHP and I think you would find, disappointingly, it's even less than 200 BHP unless it's been tuned etc. Engines in production cars rarely make their claimed BHP as it's conducted on very few engines (1%-2% at best) and in optimum conditions, almost like a laboratory, I built the dyno suite both at Jaguar and Landrover commissioned by Schenker as a consultant.

PS. You'll also note that the Rover V8 engine is not exactly a super efficient ballistic engine, one might call it 'agricultural' judging by it's origins and BHP per litre. I extracted as much/more BHP from my 1970's vintage 1600 Ford Cosworth BDA as they extract from the 4.6 Rover V8. My Vauxhall 2 litre roller body injected twin cam tuned fitted in my Caterham made a true 278 BHP on the dyno. Go figure!

Yeah, definitely the gearing. My truck feels hugely powerful in a parking lot, but when I try to merge onto the highway, I beg for power and clinch my cheeks. My 2 litre BMW makes almost twice this power with a couple of bolt ons and a very mild tune.

With the way this engine is designed, I'd be very reluctant to try to squeeze more than what Alex is making. Putting boost in this engine to me would likely cause the head gaskets to get up and walk away.

I've actually got plans worked up for a single turbo setup on 5 lbs. I just need $2k to make it happen, and that won't happen any time soon. My head gaskets will hate me, and it will be ok.

In all honesty, as long as you keep the engine cool with a bigger radiator, better water pump (electric), and better fan (also electric), then the head gaskets will be fine. You'll have more trouble out of the drivetrain if you're making more than I am. Namely the transmission and the spider gears in the diffs. Axles should even be fine if you throw in a limited slip diff and stick with stock gearing. Problem is, I also want 4.11 gears, so I'l have to have HD axles.

How do you get a bigger radiator with SAI?

Who has the ba1ls to dyno their rig?! I'd be paranoid of a head gasket failure on the first pull.

No actual dino I'm afraid. My numbers are calculated using the vehicles weight (mine, with me in it, weighs exactly 5024lbs) and accelerometer and GPS data cross referenced with engine RPM. If i had a 4 wheel dino within 100 miles, I'd absolutely take her to it. I drive my Disco ***** to the wall all the time anyway.
