Default Discovery II Overheating (moved from general tech)

Overheating!!!

Didn't tighten my cap when I checked the fluid. Drove for a while, it overheated. I pulled off and parked just in time to to turn the ignition off as it was about to die. I let it cool down. Added coolant. A lot of it, as most of it had slowly shot out of the loose reservoir cap. Filled it. Started it. It was good. Let it idle. Good. Backed up about twenty feet and saw the temp needle rise. Turned around and started accelerating forward and it rose more. Turned back around to where I was before and put it in park. The needle was underthe top white line but not in the red. Let it idle. It went to the red. I shut it off again. No coolant leak. Cap is tight. Level is perfect. What in god's name is going on??? Please reply quickly? I'm thinking maybe sludge was circulated and is now blocking the radiator? Maybe needs a flush?

Why did you take off the cap to check the fluid? If you were topping off the fluid then you have a leak.

If no leak, Air in the system. Bleed it and it should be fine.

Bleed it than bleed it again oh and if the needle starts to rise shut it down. Once it's heading up your head gaskets are heading out.

Are both radiator fans working?

It just needed to be bled. Runs perfectly. The mechanic told me I don't have the original engine (which I knew). But he said something I hadn't come across yet in my reasearching and reading about the Discoverys. I have an engine made by Land Rover. He said it wasn't the stock type made by either ford or BMW. IM ALWAYS SKEPTICAL. Even more so when a mechanic is talking to me. This ring a bell with anyone? A Land Rover made engine that doesn't have the known issues the regular production engines have?

All Discovery II engines were made by Land Rover despite the ownership.

What he probably means is that when it was replaced they used a P38 4.6 which was from a Range Rover and they put the better engines in the higher line trucks.

And yes they did test them for flaws etc. before deciding where each particular engine went even though they were all made in the same place.

Is your mechanic a LR specific indy or a guy at a "foreign car" shop that happens to occasionally work on Rovers?
