Did this at lunch today.

On a Discovery II:
Pulled the coolant bottle from the snaps.

Elevated it onto the battery cover area.
Take the LID OFF of the coolant bottle.

Jammed a screw driver into one of the battery cover latches to
keep the coolant bottle up there sitting on the battery cover by itself.
Took a very small allen wrench.
Jammed that into the throttle to get the engine to rev at 2,300 rpm.

And, there was the engine revving.

I got to cleaning the wheels.
That took about 1/2 hour.
Revved the engine at 2,300 the whole time.
When I came to look at the coolant bottle - coolant level had lowered.
I am assuming the air came up and out and the coolant went down.
I put in about an inch of antifreeze/water mix.


I added more coolant to bring the level up to the cold line.

Let the engine run still - at 2,300 RPM with the LID OFF of the coolant bottle for another 20 minutes.

Cleaned the wheels again.
Finally removed the allen wrench.

Allowed the Engine to idle speed.

Put the lid back on to the coolant bottle.

Tucked the coolant bottle hose in where it goes and snapped
the coolant bottle into it's stays.

So, now the coolant bottle is back where it goes and is sealed.

Took a drive.
NO MORE WATERFALL SOUND in the heater core.
GONE. JUST GONE.

Not even close or advisable way to do it. You "NEVER" run the engine when bleeding it, only done when stone cold.

 

actually you use the bleed screw and fill the engine thru the bleed screw. First fill the bottle up and leave the coolant bottle cap off and then fill the rest of the way thru the bleed screw. then wait for the bubbles to go away and you will be fine. put the caps back on and run the vehicle. you will find it heats up fine without issue and takes no time at all. just top it off when its cold.

Never bleed cooling systems again. Requires an air compressor. I've had one for 10 years.

 

while running at 2300 rpm and your cleaning your wheels and all kind of stuff you shouldnt be doing, what if the blockage does not move? You have just fried your motor, that is the equivelent of doing 80mph for 30 minute with an air pocket, not wise.

Good point about 80 MPH and frying motor with an air pocket.
And, Rovin4life - good advice about FILLING via the bleed screw. That makes sense.

Having owned a DISCO I for a long time, the DISCO I has the coolant bottle way way up. DISCO I will always "self bleed" when the motor is run above idle.

My theory was - set up the Discovery II to be like a DISCO I by putting the cooling bottle up high. Then run the engine fast to get all the bubbles to flow through the system and finally go to the highest point - outlet - which is the coolant bottle with the cap off.

This did work for me.

And, yes, I now see it could have had RISK too!

I still don't have any waterfall noise and coolant is remaining steady after 4 or so days.

Considering how screwed up the coolant was due to the blown head gasket - this
seems to be a "miracle".

Coolant was always spewing out onto the ground.

 

I need urgent help regarding my Disco 2, I think air is locked somewhere in my cooling system and I have bled the system how it should be bled but still it still overheat. Please I need help on proper way to get rid of the air and I just changed the head gasket.

If you have thoroughly bled the system, there's a strong possibility that your radiator is clogged or your thermostat is stuck.

Do you hear the waterfall under hard acceleration?

Why did you need to bleed the system? Did you drain the coolant for some reason?

 

Hi Mordo, I just changed the head gasket and that was why I need to bleed the system. I have also had the radiator flushed recently , the only possibility is the thermostat being stuck and I have not touched that in years. I will have to check that. What are the signs of stuck or bad thermostat?

No, there is no water fall sound behind the dashboard

You sir are a fool for doing this. let alone recomending as a way to bleed your system you should consider yourself lucky you did not fry your engine. To all reading this and contemplating this as an option. DO NOT DO THIS. In fact I would ask that the moderators delete this thread.
