I once went searching for the actual specs on the OME lift kits thinking if I knew what they were I may be able to save some cash on buying individual items if I could search all the manufacturers. This was some years ago but I started thinking about it again this week. Well as of today I can say that OME seems to keep their specs more secure than the files on the Kennedy assassination. But I'm still curious.

Anyone built their own DIY suspension lift kit? Or does anyone know the specs on any of the prepackaged lift kits out there?

 

I did it. Lifted 3.5" for about $160. Check out the link in my signature. Not sure if the same materials are still available for the rear, but it's a starting point at least.

 

Correction, $120. I actually did it for like $50 cause I already had the springs.

 

I built my lift for the rover and my jeep from parts over time. My springs on the disco for instance were a $100 new in box craigslist find, front shocks new but no box off eBay for $99 shipped, and then just broke down and bought retail rear shocks from lucky8. If you are patient, you can find parts online but it took me around 8 months to collect all the parts

 

Actually... I think it can be done cheaper than I did it. I'll post back later with what I find.

 

I think he's referring to an actual suspension lift, not re-purposing castor wheels from a floor jack...

Ok, so here's what I've got. I just ordered myself a set of springs to replace my rear springs/blocks. They are MOOG-580; it says they're for a Caprice. Looking at lengths and spring rates, they're the same spring rate as Terrafirma MD springs except they're 1-3/4"~ taller. That should mean that over stock springs I'd estimate they lift ~3"; maybe 3.5". We'll see when they come in. They should also have a good spring rate for flexibility.

So with those in the rear, move the factory rear springs to the front, and maybe different spring plates in the rear for a fine adjustment, That should sit a person at 3"-3.5" of lift for $62 shipped.

Add in chopping and re-welding the front shock towers shorter which is free if you can weld, and either longer shocks or welded on shock extension tabs for the rear, that's a real cheap lift.

Will update with how the springs fit.
