i think you're trolling. Land Rover have been pretty clear about the naming conventions they're adopting going forward. Vehicle on the right is the new LR2/freelancer. The rebadged name establishes it as the "sport" model in the discovery line.

"new discovery" is the name JLR are applying to the D5/LR5. You won't see those on the road just yet.

"LR2/freelancer"?...it says Discovery. JLR Should have just discontinued the Discovery line and kept the LR2 Freelander and RR models. Now they have a RR Sport, Evoque, new Discovery and LR2 Freelander which are essentially the same size, etc vehicle. Either way, beating a dead horse here. Glad to be the owner of a D1.

It says "Discovery Sport". It's the Ford 4 cylinder turbo, the evoque frame and new body with 5 + 2 seating and replaces the LR2.

Could it walk circles around a D2 in stock form on and off road? Yes. Period. There is no comparison, and saying it's not a real land rover is bullsh*t. In the 90s, I'm sure the series and defender guys said the same thing about the Discovery 1 and in the early 2000s about the Disco 2.

I can see the new Discovery selling ok, it should appeal to MDX, X3/X5 owners etc. I would think a lot of current LR4 owners would be turned off by it's appearance though. Just a guess, I would assume current LR4 owners like it's distinctive styling and standing out from the crowd. I think JLR will make up for it by conquest sales to people currently owning other makes. Definitely not something I'd aspire to own, might have some decent specs but visually too unappealing/weak.
It's a bit too much like the RR Evoque for my tastes and smallish inside but I'm sure it will appeal to some both in the UK and US, IMO it's very much a womans wheels like the Evoque.
I like the old D2 and the D4 (LR4) for their size and capabilities and especially the D2 for it's lesser 'trick' electronics.

I do NOT like the look of the new Discovery but I LOVE the look of my D2 and LIKE the LR3/4
I'd buy an LR4 in a heartbeat for a daily. My D2 will always be the off road and camping vehicle. Right now my D2 is my daily.

I owned D1/D2's back when they were brand new. I bought them for their design, off road capability, and functionality.
I now own a LR3 and while the LR3 is extremely capable off road with it's very advanced ABS/TC and EAS setup, I find it is also it's weak link. If it's working properly it's great, but there are way to many electronics and in a Camel Trophy world those kind of things fail. Any LR3/LR4/RRS/RR, or this new Discovery with EAS on the bumpstops is as useful as a darn Yugo off road. The RRC/D1/D2 have a good amount of electronics as well vs Series I/II/III/Defender, but they don't drop to the ground with a can bus issue or eas fault!
I'd take any of my D1/D2's off road to a remote location any day vs my LR3. Just to many things to go wrong with the LR3. The D1/D2's aren't perfect but they can be setup with lockers that you control vs a computer, no EAS to fail, and way more accessories to bolt on vs the newer LR's.
Everything eventually softens up and LR's are no exception.
