Default Does a '01 4L engine bolt to a '04 4.6L transmission

I understand there are a few differences between a '01 4L and a '04 4.6L engine (like the cylinder liner capture method and longer stroked crank). I also know there are differences in the '01 and '04 transmissions.

I just want to validate that my '01 4L engine will bolt right into my '04 Truck and transmission with no problems.

Any insight from those that know 100% for sure will help me immensely.

Thank you. As many hours as it has taken to remove the 4L and looking to many more for getting the 4.6L out, it is excellent to know that there will be no fit surprises on install day (whenever that will be....)

Abran, I don't doubt you at all but isn't the ZF4HP24 trans in the '03-'04s slightly longer than the '99-'02 version? If so how is that 20mm extra length accommodated in the setup?

Hopefully your 2001 4.0L engine is Bosch going to the 2004 vehicle which is also Bosch. If your 4.0L is from a GEMS vehicle the crank position sensor mount at the LH rear of the engine will be different and will need to be retrofit to use the Bosch CPS.

I recently took a 4.0 GEMS from a '96 D1 with a manual transmission and installed it in an '03 D2.

I had to modify it to work with the '03 BOSCH system (CPS mount changed, front cover changed, timing gear swapped, etc...) but it bolted right up to the '03 automatic transmission.

So I had an '03 D2 with a 4.0 engine. Even left the D1 heads on it. Had SAI errors, but that was all.

The difference is from bell housing back. The trans and t case mounts are different and the difference in length taken by the driveshafts.
