Thank you for letting us know about your ticking, I had a very loud ticking today when came from work, opened the hood and than I could barely hear it, went under the front, very clearly audible, tried to listen to it with a screw driver and could not locate it. Went under the fron tire heared it much better, listend to the area around rear main transmission and oilpan and it was a rough engine sound not clearly ticking. but the ticking is pretty lout there, which makes most likely crackes flex plate or less likely oil pan. Will have to get an oil pressure test.

I hit one of those undercarage car washes at least once a month, because i know all the crap is going to fall right in my eyes; as always.

1) the wiring harness is in really bad shape all around. After seeing it with everything pulled out I am very surprised that I didn't have an electrical problem before this. While everything is out I'm going to replace all the old brittle wire loom.

2) There is gunk everywhere that needs to be cleaned. There will never be an easier time to reach all of the hard to reach spots. It was very hard to determain where it was leaking from because the PO had allowed it to build up for so long.

if you have a source for the new wire loom can you post up where you got it? I'm in the same boat with brittle wire loom, the stuff from auto zone isn't cutting the mustard....

1) I was planning on starting on the timing chain and gears while the heads are getting done. Is it okay to rotate the crankshaft without the heads and pushrods on?
yes,

2) I was looking for the oil pump gears in the RAVE and couldn't find a section on them. Are there install instructions for them and what do I torque the screws holding the gear cover to?
I beleive the 1st section in the Rave gives torque spec.
3) Do I need to do anything to the lifters? (oil, clean, ect.)
as long as you have down time i would not hurt to check them for ware or mushrooming, i think #7 is the first cam lobe to ware.
4) What do I need to take to the machine shop? Just the heads or can I take the rocker shafts with them? Leave the spark plugs or remove them?
they dont need the rockers or shafts but give them a call to check

I believe you use vasiline on the gears during start-up so that it will have suction and yes you want to put the fuel pump relay. Grease i assume will do the same a vasilene AB should give you instructions with the oil pump gears. and of course fill the oil filter before installing it.

thank you for the continued update, I was wondering if you would also be changing coils, wires and plugs while you are at it, or you have already done this before this repair?
You will certainly have a very nice running Disco, when done.
I don't have any major problems but small leaks here and there and decided to let it be a land rover for a while, otherwise I will be chasing my tail. I will obviously do all the maintenance as recommended here.
The car is out of the garage, I cleaned the garage and my wife's car is in now and she is happy
