Don’t leave your sunroof open :( p0500 p0741 p0722 code help!
hey guys,
I had a blunder yesterday. Left my 99’ D2 sunroof open in the rain. Roof rack stopped some of it, but not enough.
After spending some time with towels and a hair drier, everything looked ok. Started right up, no check engine lights.
This morning i pulled away from my house and got a hard shift from 2nd to 3rd.. slam! And the M and S lights came on. Whatever, I’ve had those come on before (loose battery etc).
I got about 5 miles down the freeway and then it happened. Truck started stuttering hard and slowing down, even with the gas pedal to to floor. Sounded like really bad misfire. Then the CEL came on, P0500, P0741, and P0722.
I limped the truck back home on side roads and noticed it drives perfectly fine in 1,2,3 but not in D.
Every time I put it in D it starts stuttering and won’t go over maybe 25-30mph and bucking like a bronco. When I shift down to 3rd it will drive fine and can cruise at 50mph all day, no stuttering, no misfire. Idle is also fine.
Help me guys, I need some ideas! Thanks

my other thought is maybe something with the shifter. Although I haven’t pulled the shifter cover to see if there is anything electronic under there that could be affected.

So the p0500 is a road speed signal issue, and then both the p0741 and p0722 are transmission related. One being torque converter lock up, the other being stall speed.
Your TCM is under the drivers seat, and it is likely swamped. Pull the seat out, and you will see it there. Pull the TCM, dry it out, clean the connector block and then clear all faults and try again
TC P0722
Stall speed monitoring.
Possible causes by suggested order of priority:
^ Connectors C243,EAT C193.
^ Open circuit shaft speed sensorC193/14 (B) to C193/42 (R).
^ Open circuit C243/E (K) to C193/42 (R).
^ Open circuit C243/F (B) to C193/14 (B).
^ Shaft speed electrical interference.
^ Shaft speed sensor fault.
^ Torque converter mechanical fault.
DTC P0741
Lock-up clutch monitoring.
Possible causes by suggested order of priority:
^ Gear ratio fault present.
^ Engine Speed signal fault present (N_MOT invalid).
^ Solenoid lock-up clutch S/C or O/C fault present
^ Transmission mechanical fault (torque converter).
DTC P0500
Vehicle speed sensor signal error Drive cycle B:Signal missing.
Possible causes by suggested order of priority:
^ Connectors C504, C290, ECM C637 (B).
^ Open circuit - C637/22 (KG) to C504/3 (KG).
^ ABS or Wheel sensor fault.

Alright guys, I think I got it!!! Pulled the ATC module, just slide the seat all the way forward and you can access it from the back seat. A little bit of moisture on the wires and connector but didn’t look too bad. I also pulled the shifter cover and disconnected the plug for the sport mode/manual gear lock figuring it may also cause shifting issues. Spent a couple hours with the blow dryer. Took the truck on the freeway, shifted fine, no stuttering, no check engine lights! Thanks for all the help.

Even though you didn't see much moisture or signs of water...it only takes a few drops to do damage. Water is a great conductor, ask anyone that has ever dropped a hair dryer in the bath tube while bathing. Scratch that, ask the folks that found the barbecued bather.
Never under stood why they mounted the trans controller under the radio amp...l guess...having your radio work is more important than moving. On my 01, actually put two inches of rubber under mine, gets it up off the carpet.
Brian.
