Thumbs down

Another thing, when you put it back together, watch the position of the lever that holds the micro switch on the bottom of the actuator. It's easy to hang up on it. If you break it, your truck honks at you when locking the door. It thinks it is open due to the switch. It's really annoying...

Test the switch by throwing the striker lock manually on the actuator before putting everything back. Sometimes you'll see that the manual latch barley moves. That means the gears on that motor that cause the issue is off "timing" with the position.

I showed a 20 year Land Rover technician what actually causes the failure. His eyes glazed over and still feels a new replacement is worth it. It's that tedious.

The second motor is the "superlock" motor, it disables the door handles on the inside to confound the thieves who would break in to look for sacks of gold that Rover owners must transport to dealerships on a frequent basis.

Can you post pix of yours?

This "short" makes some nice pretty sparks which produces tons of carbon burning up the brushes. I've repaired several now by just cleaning the brushes off. What's interesting is Land Rover used 2 different motors in the same actuator. You can't use the brushes off the other one in the same actuator. That stinks cause the "other one" looks stronger.

Oh, and you'll break tabs pulling the case apart. Don't worry, it's par for the course..
So, are you talking about how you have repaired D1..........or.....D2 actuators by cleaning the brushes?

Thanks,

Brian, how did you remove the actuator from the door handle? I'm struggling with this now...

The short rod that connects the door handle to the actuator is just a press fit into the green plastic fitting/clip. Remove the single door handle fastener,...push the door handle forward then pull it straight out of the door. Pry the connecting rod from the green plastic fitting with a screwdriver or similar......and....yes, the rod can fall down inside the door.

So, I have broken all the tabs off.....now,....how do you get the plastic fitting over the motors off? ....and ...... How do you get the motors themselves apart to clean the brushes?....

You'll have to bend the 2 tabs off the bottom of the motor casing to release that cover. Be gentle with it...

That was actually a 2 part question,......need to get the actuator plastic covering the motors off first. I have broken off all the tabs,......do I now just start prying and breaking plastic off or first maybe make a cut with my dremel or a sharp utility knife??

Need to either get this done today or order a new actuator,....I'm selling the truck and the back door is currently held shut with a tie-down strap lashed across to the passenger side door.
