Default Drain & Refill Transmission - Only 4 quarts?

Hey guys, I changed the transmission fluid and filter in my '00 Discovery, and I was only able to replace 4 quarts of fluid.

I followed the write-up on this site (and checked others as well) and most state that 6-8 quarts should come out of it. I know I didn't miss any steps, so I'm a bit puzzled why so little came out.

I drained the fluid with the truck cold after it had sat overnight. I had a 7 quart drain pan, and it filled it up about 2/3 of the way. I replaced filter, gasket and pan and proceeded to put about 2-3/4 quarts with the truck off before it started running out of the fill hole.

I started the truck and let it idle in park, while I topped the fluid off. It took another 1-1/4 quart and then started dribbling out the fill hole. I let it get good and warmed up (so the fluid would get to 104F per the instructions on the pan) and moved the gearshift to different positions like "R", "D", etc. I couldn't get much, if any extra fluid in it even after it had warmed up, when I pulled fill plug, fluid would run out.

Should I be concerned? I plan on doing it again in a couple weeks just to get a greater portion of the old fluid changed.

I did mine without a filter change a couple of weeks ago and that is about all I got back in it also. When I did it a year ago when I changed the filter, I think it took 5 qts.

There is also fluid in the torque converter which does not drain out when you are performing the transmission oil change. Perhaps you were already low on transmission fluid in the first place.

If it shifts fine then you are more then likely okay.

You can always let it cool down over night, start it up and take out the fill plug and make sure it is full. Have a quart of transmission fluid ready and if no fluid comes out when you take out the fill plug add some more. If fluid comes out then you are good.
