Default 6 quarts out, but only 3.5 quarts go back in?

Yes, I changed my transmission fluid myself for the first time. Got about 6 quarts out and only about 3.5 quarts went back in before it started pouring out of the check hole. What's up with that? I check it again after about 100 miles and it still pours out of the check hole. Am I missing soemthing or did my last service guy put way too much in?

are you sure you changed the transmission? if dry which yours wasnt i presume,.. it would take 10.25 quarts to fill it. the transfer box on the other hand is more around 2.1 quarts to refill. he could have used an electrical pump to fill it and forced it. even then it would be shoiting out as he tried to plug it.

Fill it a second time with the engine running and the tranny in park.

Mike hit the nail on the head. The truck should be running when you do the final pour and check.

2000 DII, I just did a fluid / filter replacement on 2002 Disco. When I began pumping inthe new ATF, I was only able to get about 2.5 quarts of fluids in the pan. I then drove it around the block twice, manually going through the gears & down-shifting manually the gears. I then came back pulled the plug, no fluid drained out on me and pumped in 3.5 quarts till it couldn't hold no more. No problems since. By driving it around the block you filled all the veins in the transmission that have been drained.

Wrong way to do it.
Fill it the first time, then start the engine shift drive to reverse 2 times, leaving the engine running and the tranny in park fill it the second time and you are done.

Default Well, like I said I drove it for 100 miles or so...

then checked it again and it still poured out. It wasn't running though - so i'll have to try that. I'll let you know in a few days. Thanks guys!

You did not follow my directions, I said after filling it the first time, start the engine, shift the trnny a couple of times then go refill the fluid with the tranny in park and "THE ENGINE RUNNING", now you have to go do it again. Do not drive the truck till you fill the tranny properly or you can cause damage when driving.
