The dreaded flashing M & S lights
I've got the same problem with my 2004 model; the lights on both the dash and the gearbox selector are going at the same time...it's had the gearbox switch done and that seemed to sort it..for about a month and then its started again. It seems to be hit and miss if it drives ok or not; this morning not....it doesn't seem like its changing gear but it cant possibly be doing 70mph in 1st can it ??!!!! It sometimes seems to start off in limp mode then all of a sudden wakes up
Limp mode is 3rd gear, which is why it would go 70mph yet be really slow starting out... If it indeed suddenly wakes up, then the flashing lights would go away, right?
There are several causes of the blinking lights, not just the XYZ switch, the most common being weak battery, bad battery connections, bad ground connections. Since you report the lights on your gear shift bezel also blink it may be related to the XYZ (gear selector) switch under the bezel. As you report it intermittent you might remove the plastic bezel and inspect for old coins or other interfering objects... or if the switch itself is loose and moving around.

Thanks Dave 03s,
It actually has M&S flashing as soon as I turn it on now and the Mode button does nothing. They flash all the time on the dash and the only time the gear indicator on the dash changes is when it’s in N or P . It’s just had a new battery too ....I do t know what an XYZ switch is ?? I’ve taken the plastic covering off the gear selector today and there’s nothing stuck / loose. The car hasn’t been started or moved since x,as eve so I jumped it today then took it a ride up the motorway.....as you say it’s really slow to start off but fine when it gets up to speed. Maybe it just doesn’t like the British climate !!!!

I think when the M&S lights are flashing you are stuck in 3rd gear. I had an intermittent version of that for a while because I was intimidated by taking the XYZ switch off and cleaning it, its not hard and fixed my problem right away. Just follow the procedure in the RAVE manual.
If the truck hasn't been driven since late December, it's probably just low battery voltage. Check the terminal connections on the battery to make sure they are clean and tight.
The XYZ switch is not accessible via the bezel. It's mounted on the side of the transmission, so you need to crawl under the truck to get to it. There are two 10mm bolts that hold it in place, and one wire connector that needs to be unclipped in order to take the whole switch off. They can be opened and cleaned, but it may be worth just trying to align it correctly first. Loosen the two bolts slightly and then rotate the entire switch assembly with someone inside the cabin, with the ignition on but the engine not running. Hopefully they will see the gear indicator changing as the XYZ is rotated. Once it reads correctly in all gears, tighten the 10mm bolts again.

seams of the white box (xyz) switch. Get the wd40 can with a spray nozzzle so you can get it up to the seams and spray the hell out of it any where you can on it.
there’s a perpetual condensation leak that rots the connector inside the box. This technique has helped me a few times years apart.
it was to hard for my sausage fingers to replace the switch. I hope this helps.

Thanks very much lateball, I'm hoping to get it fixed..althoug its had a new XYZ switch in June last year so should be broke that quickly should it...I must have the only Land Rover that's allergic to wet / mud / Winter/ Britain / being driven !! shame...its body work is beautiful but it's falling to bits
