One other possibility check the a main intake hose from the air filter box to the throttle body for damage or loose connections. If that has slipped off the the throttle body or developed any large cracks you will get those symptoms.

Thanks very much Richard, mine's gone off to the garage today to be looked at although it did a clunk then stopped driving altogether this morning. I put it in Low gear box and let it drives itself down the land for a minute then changed back to High and it decided to drive again...."normally" ie like I've got my handbrake on....

Anymore ideas guys ???? This car is back up at the garage but somehow its not playing ball....one minute the lights don't come on then the lights do come on - it seems ok if you start the car in Neutral but if you start in park it has hissy fit and lights flash......Garage guy says that he thinks the gearbox is ok but somehow the spindle from the gearbox to the xyz switch has some play in it....stumped !!!!!

I'm 3months into this same fight. 1 month DIY and 2 months at different LR "specialist/master mechanic" shops. I tried new battery, alternator, XYZ, all new grounds, swapped TCU, then swapped ECU. After that I gave up and took it to the pros. We've now run overlays on just about every wire/connector you can imagine. Randomly tried a new MAF and SAI just as a hail mary. 2nd ship finally gave up this week. 2000 Disco 2 w/ 102k miles. Only code that ever pops up is 1562. Live data readings newer show a drop in voltage anywhere, but still going into limp mode constantly. Last option i can think of is just swapping entire engine and trans wiring harnesses, but that sounds pretty terrible. May just throw in the towel and get an LR3 tomorrow.

What a pain they are Gillarc...mine ended up going back to the land rover "specialist" after the £400 bill......took it then the an auto gearbox man who was brilliant and said that a faulty xyz had been fitted.....pants down / **** slapped good and proper !!! so he very kindly ordered a recon one from ebay and fitted it all for £180.00...took longer for the engine to cool down than him swap it over....good as gold and SOLD !!!!!! back to my reliable Ford focus estate that never misses a beat at 170k miles..

+1 for cleaning the switch. Loopy, I hope it was faulty, not just dirty.
I found that HandyHowie has a nice write up, but he omits one critical detail: The plug (on my 2000) won't release until it is taken off the bracket, which locks the plug in place.
In fairness, Howie's is a '99, and may not have this bracket. His images show the internal gasket, and a little silicone grease will refresh the seal.

Default The 5 minute cure

spray WD 40 in the cracks of the XYZ box. It will dissolve the electrical powders and you’ll be running in no time.

I've done the xyz reverse wiper test (not sure how reliable that is) and the rear wiper comes on when I put the vehicle in reverse. The one strange clue that may shed some light however is that the other day, the car was running fine. I stopped the vehicle put it in park, I got back in the car and slammed the door a bit harder than normal and boom, the lights started flashing. Not sure what that means. Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks

I would consider it a nuisance rather than a dread.

add: P1562 is battery below 9v at transmission computer. AFAIK the battery is fine, maybe I have a loose ground, etc. to look into.

You should get the codes read and start from there.

this is same code I got. My battery light came on. Flashing m and a lights. Discovered my alternator was bad. Changed alternator. Charged battery. Still had m and s lights. Also saw shifter flashing in unison. Then noticed I was in 3rd gear. Limp mode. But car was drivable just acted strange. Not shifting. Even got on interstate. Finally hooked up scanner. 1562 code. When I clears the code, the flashing lights stopped and it came out of limp mode.
