Default Drivers side window problems

Took my 2000 Rover to a BoyScouts campout this week-end. I've got the door requlator problem that won't let the window come back up if you let it all the way down. This happened to me once and I got it back up by pushing a towel down inside rubber window channel and over the glass, then using a small pair of king-nosed pliers to lift the glass upward as I pressed the switch.
Anyway,I was driving to campground when I came upon an accident in a curve that had the road shut down. When the officer came back to my truck to tell me what was happening....yep, you guessed it. I hit the switch and let the window all the way down. Got back to camp and tried technique I just described, but with different result. Maybe it had something to do with it being 36 degrees. My drivers side window just shattered like someone had shot it when I put a little pressure on the glass to pull it up.
So, now, I need a replacement glass. [:@]I've seen a couple local shops who will do it for around $300. Is that a normal price? Can I buy the glass and install it? I'm fairly handy with mechanical stuff. What are some thoughts on this? Thanks!

It is common for the plastic roller that lifts the window to break. When that happens it binds.

Snowdude, Here in Tenn camping in Nov is great! Probably not quite as cold as it is in Wisconsin.
Was a little cold driving the 22 miles thru the Smokie mountains at 11pm to get back to camp.

Any suggestions on the window replacement??

Call your insurance agent, it will be covered under your glass policy.

Alphawolfman, I had my RH front window give me problems last year and I discovered not only the plastic roller giving me issues b/c it was almost completely broke on the regulator but also the motor lost most all of its strength, I did some tinkering to the regulator and put a new motor in and presto, like new again.
