Default drivetrain questions

I'm a new 2000 land rover disco ii owner, I have questions about what came stock on what years and what is the best for off road. I just got a cdl shifter setup from an 04. I'm wondereing on axles, transmissions, engines, differentials, transfer cases, brakes etc. Are some better or stronger than others? was there ever an iron engine made. are all gears and carriers the same, etc. any cheap upgrades from finding doner vehicles?

All years have the same axle ratio, t-case, engine, etc.
The transmission on the '03 and '04 years are different from all other DII's, otherwise all else is the same.
No cast iron anywhere on the truck, its to heavy, aluminum is lighter and dissipates heat better.
The only thing cheap about a donor vehicle is the virtually unlimited number of spare parts.
