Default e-brake housing problem

2001 disco 2

so my e-brake has not been working for a while. Previously I did a adjustment with the bolt on front of housing and it work great for a while. Problem was I would forget to take e-brake off and that’s where it started I think. Every now and then I woul hear a loud tink while driving around. Never could figure what speed or braking or what produced it. Today I went down there to take apart the housing to look at the shoes thinking something was broke. I ended up drilling out the alignment screw as it was stuck. Hit it with a hammer and wire brushed the studs. The thing would not come off. In a frustrated mode I removed the 30mm nut connecting the housing to transfer box. Well that made the whole thing pop off the output shaft and was leaking gear fluid. So I promptly put it back on. It still leaked slowly. I’m assuming there’s a seal back there I need to replace now, is that right? I needed to move the Rover so the lady can get out of the garage so I tried backing it up so she would have the room but no gears. Forward and reverse made a grind sound. Park was no longer park and was like it was in neutral, and no parking brake. She’s chalked for now. I have a rave manual but am at a loss where to start. Sorry for the length. Hope y’all can help me out.

Thanks

Yeah, you may have damaged the seal for the rear output flange. Should be able to replace it without much trouble, although I have not done it personally on this truck. You say you have no gears. Stupid question, you reinstalled the flange and rear drive shaft, yes?

Yes I did reinstall the whole brake housing back on. Not sure why removing it would cause my gears to grind after reinstalling the output shaft but back on.

Now that I am off work and have a window of no rain I’ll drain the transfer box and pull the brake housing back off to access the stuck housing cover. I’ll try to take pics.

Also confirm that the range select is not sitting in Neutral.

Range select as in hi or low? I will verify. Didn’t get to it yesterday.

Okay. So finally took it all apart again. The output shaft flange was stuck to the front part of ebrake housing. Separated them and did some preventative for next time. One of the shoes had a pad that disconnected from the actual brake shoe. So once I fought everything back on and fully assembled I adjusted the brake screw to spec and everything worked. My learn for this is that park, forward and reverse only work when rear prop shaft is connected. Wierd part in removing brake housing cover is this snail came out. First time ever removing it. Snail was still alive. Buddy who was under the truck with me said he swore it fell out from inside where the shoes were. Lol.
