The fact that "the engine will spin over" indicates to me that it's not a typical immobilization situation. When I was sorting out an immobilization problem earlier this year on my truck, the starter would not engage when I turned to key to Position III.
It is odd that the red light in the instrument cluster continues to flash, and the hazards continue to flash.

i have now managed to get the EKA number
it seems to have accepted it and the alarm is silent
have pressed the inertia switch under bonnet by bulkhead
but the hazard ( 4 ways )still flash,, along with the two green gear cog looking lights on dash marked M and S
could it be that as its an automatic that it has a level sensor for oil in the gearbox?
i believe that the oil is low and was trying to get it lifted so to get under to fill it when it refused to start
