Default Electrical problem... is this normal?

Started blowing fuses and tail lights on my 99 Disco 1. I removed the right rear tail light assembly and noticed the metal plates that go around the bulbs are rotted out. (Don't know how as everything looks dry in there) So while I'm waiting for a new light assembly, I unplugged it. The odd part is with it unplugged, the lights in the bumper don't work and neither does the cruise. Does one of those wires supply a ground to the bumper lights? Does the cruise get a "signal" from the tail lights? (I thought that was the purpose of a brake light switch) I'll get my new tail light in a few days but I was just curious about this.

No that's not normal. I would check all your grounds for the lights and make sure they are clean and tight. A loose ground could be causing arcing that is overloading the circuit and popping the fuse.

that would be my guess, the ground is back feeding the circuit.

Wouldn't surprise me if there's a bad ground. 10 years in the rust belt haven't been kind to it. I know rust doesn't make a good ground. Hopefully, the new light assembly will make it all good again.

I spent 6hrs today on my '97 tracking down & sorting out my "stuck in park" & no right rear brake light.

It turns out that I had an intermittent short in the housing.

check your "stop light fuse #1 (15amp) under the dash driver's side.

If it's blown, your stop, cruise, turn signals, etc won't work.

Is the rubber gasket around taillight housing good?
Is there a rubber grommet around trailer wiring floor exit below right taillight? whew

These are sources for moisture

Oh, the cruise release switch is 1" below the stop light switch.(2 grey wires)

luck,greg

Replaced with new light assembly and all is well. Also my rear fog lights now work! They haven't worked since I bought it a year ago.
