Default Electronic Overdrive Retrofit for D2?

Does anyone know whether there is an electronic overdrive kit that will fit the D2?

Its already got a transmission overdrive, and its electronically controlled

I've been getting a little educated on retrofit electronic overdrives as I am starting to look at Spitfires, which came with a manual, electronically operated overdrive.

As the D2 pulls along strongly at 2500rpm and 65-70mph, I thought that dropping that to 1750-2000rpm with the same speed ratio could improve fuel economy.

Clearly that's what Triumph did with the Spitfire when the horsepower got up there enough to allow for the fitting of an offboard overdrive, so I thought why not on the D2 as it looks like it's been done on other vehicles, including Land Rovers.

Guessing if there were such a retrofit, it would go between the transmission and transfer case.

It could go on the pto output

at lower RPM the torque converter wont be locked. The intake manifold is also tuned for around 2500 rpm so lowering the cruise RPM could be detrimental to economy since the drivetrain is less efficient at that speed.

With my 33s, I run at about 2200 on the highway at 70. My truck hunts between locked and unlocked a lot. I wouldn't recommend going any lower than 2500

33s? are these differential gears?

Looks like 2500rpm at 70 mph is as good as it gets.

I guess all us D2 owners just have to live with the reality that we're pushing the equivalent of a brick thru the air at 70mph

Our D2’s fly down the road very well vs a 97-10 Jeep Wrangler that is setup for off road... My 05 Rubicon could barely do 65MPH with a tailwind. My D2’s aren’t race cars, but once I’m rolling 75-80MPH isn’t hard at all. Now in the hills it’s more difficult, but still better vs a Jeep.

Even if it we're to improve fuel economy, it would never be enough to make up for the cost of adding the overdrove unit. You'd be looking at thousands of dollars said and done.
