Default Engine / Head Gasket gone bad on my 04 Disco II SE

Hi All, I used to post here a bunch a few years ago but my account has gone inactive. As usual with my Land Rover, I'm baaaack.

Heard a LOUD noise when I hit the gas pedal...I took it in to my normal shop and he basically said the engine needs replacing.

I don't want to invest much more at this point. How much should this sort of repair cost me? AM I BETTER OFF JUST SELLING IT FOR PARTS? If so, how much can I actually get for this car without a good engine?!

Thanks for the advice, fellow rovers.

Not enough info there what exactly did he say was wrong, head gaskets are pretty simple. Bottom end is more difficult.

But with dead engine 500.00 I would think

Mechanic said there was an "orange glow" beyond teh head gasket. Engine needs replacing. and even after that, he things there could be more issues. I have no idea about this kind of stuff. Where would I get rid of a Disco '04 like this?

Well you came to the right place to get informed, because that is what you need. Information. You need a better understanding of what is going on with your vehicle before you can make any sort of informed decision.

No offense, but my best guess is that you are a college student on a budget who bought a D2 because it was a nice cheap ride... Or something close... With no mechanical skills, or place to use those skills if you had them?

First off, where are you located? There has to be a better shop with more clear answers to your problem. I've never heard an orange glow being an issue ever before. Maybe another member here can recommend a place where you can get a more accurate diagnosis.

These trucks arent that complex, nor are that expensive to fix (compared to a new vehicle) if you go to the right place. If you go to a "foreign car shop" or gas station mechanic then yes they see you as a baller with his next alimony payment in your pocket...

So do yourself a favor and get some more information, even if that means providing more specific info here...

@Zachary Price Find a new mechanic that guy apparently either does not want your money or is incompetent.

The orange glow is almost always Catalytic converters being clogged so pretty that in itself could cause the noise and it will cause significant performance issues.

As to why the cats are clogged, the 2 big ones are age the most common they disintegrate over time and clogging usually due the collapse or to pretty massive oil leaks.

Now the loud noise could some kind of internal engine failure causing massive amounts of oil to go to the cat,or the cat collapsing.

As to getting rid of it a wrecker is the only place where I am that you could get rid of it no one else would touch it.
If you were close to me I would give you a hundred bucks so I could strip it for parts for my 04

is your coolant in the expansion tank orange?

if so, the coolant leaking could be the "orange glow" that the mechanic saw when he looked at the head gasket.

a head gasket leaking is not a death knell for these trucks.

head gaskets are just part of maintenance at this point.

a little more info from your mechanic would be helpful. ie, why does he think the engine needs replacing?

edit: punctuation

These discos might be simple for some shops from my experience most shops become brain dead when one of these comes in the shop
because you actually have to take the time to troubleshoot and research which they want no part of
