with the aluminum flat "rod". it was distinctly from the valve cover and if I recall strong from the rear drivers side. i will have it checked by the indie before I make any moves for sure.

one thing that popped in my mind is that tick started shortly (how long?) after oil pump replacement and switch from Mobil High Mileage Synthetic to Amsoil - by the indie. My Rotella and big filter change didn't cure it.

next step is to go heavier on the oil...forgot what weight you said, put in the oil pressure sandwich.

i still have no idea of my oil pressure so i have to do that or wait until I do the sandwich.

So like can you idle with cover off, and press on rocker arms to determine if one is cracked?

slang, and other interested in how to desludge - see this Cleaning up a sludged engine - a short sequence

and http://yotarepair.com/Engine_replace.html to clean with diesel fuel and a brush

If the sludge build up on the rockers, remove and soak.

cover off hmmm. it was removed and cleaned last june even if i'm not sure how good a job the guy did.

i would have to get someone to diagnose that it was necessary and I wasn't barking up the wrong tree before i went there. i need to do that.

then the train of thought seems to be if it is an arm that i need to replace all of them along with the camshaft. of course when I'm there I should do the headgaskets as well. if i do the headgaskets, i'm not assured of anything as the heads may be warped and theres no sense milling cuz if you don't mill the bottoms (requiring an engine removal) it may not hold anyway.

slippery slope.

OK,

I think I'm going to remove cover and clean and service lifters. Hope that I can remove some dirt or buildup that allows them to move freely. Mayyyyyyyybe this is something I can do myself.

Then I'm going to flush clean oil, add sandwich plate and gauge, put in some Rotella 20w50 and some MMO. If it still ticks and I can drive it awhile like it is I will.

So. I'm going Synthetic, Dino, Synthetic I guess. Maybe that will help too.

Yeah the thread has gotten out of control and I hijacked it. Um, Sorry.

Thanks D-Ro and Sava.
