That sounds very similar to mine. Maybe a tad louder but not sure. How noticeable is it while driving?
Have you had your oil pressure checked? I'm run around 48 to 50 psi while driving using Rotella 15w40.

Honestly ralph.. you would never know driving it. Then agaim it may be hars to tell since i have the magnaflow catback. Totally quiet otherwise.

It's at idle and below 1500rpm that you can hear it. Never had the oil pressure checked. Don't even know how to be honest. Purrs like like a kitten aside from this.

It's a little disheartening. I love this truck. Ranks in top 5 out of all 66 or so cars I have owned.

I'll bet.. I'm just being paranoid, (uh oh.. another noise in the rover). And lots of them make this noise at 140k with all original internals. It's a machine. It isn't perfect.

Mine has been making that noise for over a year. Not sure what it is, I thought it was a stuck lifter at first but I realized the noise is coming from the bottom end. So I'm not 100% sure what it is, but I have good oil pressure and am not going to worry about it until it appears to become an issue.

Again.. thanks ralph. I fell a little better about it. Lol.. "yay I'm not the only one..." feeling. jahahaha

Let's see what other think as well. I'm pretty sure I will be told to replace the main bearings. Not sure I'm up to a complete engine disassembly to have the crank cut and what not. I'm sure that would fix the problem though.

My engine also has a slight knock that you can here if you crawl under the truck while it idles warm, but it can not be heard unless I stick my head under the car. Honestly, I would hold off on the engine rebuild until absolutely necessary. I have seen people throw all kinds of money at these trucks trying to fix the tick and knock sounds. I think the lower end knock is more of a bearing or oil pump thing, and an upper tick is usually related to a bad lifter or worn out camshaft. New bearings, camshaft and lifters are not expensive, but it is a big project installing them.

I would start by installing a $70 oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on your oil PSI.
My rule of thumb: If your coolant Temp is good, your oil pressure is good, and no SES then keep driving. If you notice your oil pressure gauge sitting down really low at idle or while driving or if your oil warning light comes on then you need to start looking into rebuilding the engine or oil pump.

Did the noise get a little louder when you put the thicker oil in?

The first time i put 15w40 in my truck it knocked like crazy on the bottom end. Shortly i switched back to 10w30 with some marvels mystery oil and my knock slowly went away. Tirns out i had a clogged lifter.

I wouldnt say change your oil again, but add some of the mmo in there and you could get lucky like i did. Its just a mild mineral oil thatll clean up the lifters, maybe you have the same problem i had. i put in in every oil change and my engine runs phenomenally, but ive also done a lot to my engine.

Excuse all my grammer mistakes, typing on an iphone aint easy

Thanks jared. I'll look into the oil pressure guage.

Noise didn't get any worse. It may have become a little less noticeable. Had a difficult time pinpointing it on my way home this morning.

Like i said. I really like this thing. I'd rather not hang it up for a rebuild just yet. At least let me have a few years first... work out all the bugs.. then it can blow up, just as I get it all right. Lol

Rod bearings where they connect to the crank shaft.
Or Crank Main bearings.

Pull the pan.
Replace the rod bearing shells.
Replace the crank bearing shells.

You'll be OK then.

Here is a bunch of videos

If it is that easy jfall.. I'll add it to the "rover do list" next time the oil pan comes off. Probably next year.

After a drive home.. The sound is barely noticable. Consensus is it will probably be ok?

My 1997 make that clunk clunk at idle a lot.
Sometimes you get a real loud thunk here and there too.

Went probably 50,000 miles like that up to 170,000 miles.
Then I sold the truck.

Hopefully it is still going.
I did not pull the oil pan.
I had bought the replacement shells to do the job.

You will probably be OK.
I would put 20W/50 oil into it for the summer.
And regular dino oil - not synthetic.
