Default Engine noise, should I be worried (newbie, please help!)

Hello,

Just bought a used 80k+ miles 2000 disco.
The engine makes a little but constant rattling noise (not too loud but annoying enough for me to get concerned) every time I hit the gas pedal to over 2000rpm....
Did anybody else notice that on theirs? If you know, can you tell me what is wrong and if I should be worried?

Thanks~

Can you be more specific as to the location of the noise?

Disco Mike,

Well, thesound comes from under the hood, and definitely from the engine or components working close to and/or with the engine (I am not a mechanic sorry for the broad description) because the noise happens only when I step on the gas pedal, especially when the car needs to make an effort (hills, passings, accelerating). It sounds very much like the noise can be heard louder from the passenger side than from the driver's though. The sound itself is like the sound of an under power, very old mini van or pick up truck (rattling sound I'd say, some told it could come from the timing belt, I'm not sure)... There's no sound when my foot is off the accelerator pedal or when I'm going downhill. I am definitely annoyed and I am starting to be worried as well.
The dealer charges $150.00 just fordiagnostic.Very expensive. I just wanted to know if it was normal or if I should take it to the dealer.

Thanks.

Please do post back with the root cause. Purely a guess without being able to hear it but it sounds to me like an exhaust manifold gasket just starting to let go.

X2 on that. I was thinking cracked manifold. I know D1's were prone to this. If you called Mike and have found the problem, let us know..

Well that sounds like low octane fuel or a bad knock sensors.
(especially when the car needs to make an effort)

Its easy to find a leaking mainfold just use Seafoam to see if its leaking.

Well I took my disco to a mechanic last week end and he was able to fix the problem for just $150. It was a leak in the exhaust system, and I cannot recall where it was, anyways, the car stopped making that awful noise. Thanks for your help guys.
