Default Engine Options

I searched, and came up with a few choices in engines. Most of those threads were full of I heard people doing this, or I once new a guy who did that. Only a couple actually had true facts from people who had done it.

There are options out there for a rebuilt 4.6, and some of those places have been around for along time. I know Atlantic British sells the 4.6, but I can't seem to find any reviews on their engine. Another option is Turner out of the UK, and this seems like the most logical choice. I also know about Roverland Parts, and Motorcars LTD. I'm leaning towards the Turner block, but wanted to hear from people with real experience to see what their thoughts are.

We're also open to a TD5 with manual transmission swap.

Thanks,
Mike

You can't go wrong with turner. They are top notch. There is also d&d manufacturing out of Michigan. They are very reputable and well respected. I'm sure others will chime in. In my opinion, Atlantic British is over priced. Have you checked local engine builders in your area also

I'm seeing that Atlantic British is overpriced as well, and there's hardly any information out on their engines. I'll have to check out D&D a bit more. I came across their site a few months ago, but never gave it much thought.

I have not looked into having this done locally, and the couple shops in my area seem to have mixed reviews as well.

Just got off the phone with Mark, at D&D Fabracation, and he will be doing the re-sleeving of my block, cylinder head work and maybe reassemble into long block form. Depends how busy I stay at work, just not finding the time to do this myself...but who knows...I may assemble. Was suppose to drop the block off today, but it will be next Saturday now. Heading to the garage at this very moment to get it ready for him.

Anyhow, Mark seems to know his stuff and has dealt with these engines quite often. I'm fortunate...his shop is only ten miles from my doorstep. So, shipping isn't an issue. Just google them and you'll get a bit of info off their website...or just call Mark.

Now, I have no firsthand knowledge of their work, everything I've been told or read has been quite positive. However, after talking to Mark extensively...he assured me that I would be totally satisfied with the outcome. Wish I would have gotten over there today to see their operation, and could give you more info.

Good luck,

Brian.

+1 on D&D and Turner.
The problem with a td5 build is the lack of folks able to work on it over here.
why not just put a 5.3Ls in it and run it on the Bosch engine management? Eric Brown at Trailhead will do a turnkey build for you and Lucky8 are also going to do installs.

trailhead is backed up till at least April and you are looking at $10,500 on average out the door for the 4.8 and it goes up drastically with the 5.3

Most good engine options will have a wait.
Unless you're doing the swap yourself, 10 is a fairly good ballpark estimate to set aside for a full install, including engine.

My local Seattle indie charges 12 and up for a used 300TDI conversion into a d1 or Classic. It really depends on how many labour hours go into the LS conversions.

thats what trailhead told me when I called them about a week ago. I figured for that price, I'll just keep my factory and rebuild mine when it comes time. I've been debating buying a spare block out of a junk yard and just having a rebuilt one on standby. I know you can order a good rebuilt trans from rimmer bros or roverpharm

I've contact Trailhead, and Lucky8 about the LS already. Trailhead wants to vehicle to be there now for an install in April, and we can't do that. Lucky8 isn't doing anything right now, but should be in a couple weeks.

I'm being told the 4.8 LS with SAI will be around $10,300. Jumping up to the 5.3L aluminum might get the total up to $11k. This is something that we're considering, and haven't thrown it out just yet.

I can vouch for Turner Engineering as being the dog's whatsits, they have been in the engine business for many years and also specialise in Rover engines. They aren't 'el cheapo' but they guarantee their work.

As for a TD5 engine, brilliant engine and I can't fault it but I believe it wasn't sold in the US and is banned in many states. If you went down the TD5 route you'll need matching engine, turbo, ECU and gearbox and maybe check the diff ratios for compatibility. Just a few other things, you'll need a total TD5 exhaust system and maybe a TD5 engine wiring loom.
