engine performance
To Discolvr's point, being how the rover v8 is basically a mid-60's Buick design... has anyone attempted to mate a late model (like mid 80's - early 90's) BOP 3.8 liter six setup? Is the bell housing any where near similar? I know with the Buick Turbo setup these little sixes would put out a lot of power, and the Pontiac Bonneville I had back in 92 was uber-smooth...
Just a thought.

True off roading is slow and methodical, its not how fast you make it to the top, its the class of which you do it in.
As if you think that a Rover diesel is going to get you more speed...I need some of what you are smoking.

Maybe the question is are you looking for more power or speed. If you are saying that when trying to climb the hill you sit there with the engine bogging down and not moving, then you have some other issues with the motor. If you make it to the top fine but are passed by Jeeps that weigh half your weight then you should be willing to spend a lot of money to get the result.
We sacrifice some things for other advantages. Out of the box the Rover is the most capable 4X4 out there for all around off roading. It is not a rock crawler or a desert truck.
I say to change the plugs, wires, O2 sensors and do all your fluids. Use the highest octane you can get in your location and you should be good. You will never win a jump off the line at a stop light but you will get to your destination.
