Last night I rechecked the comp. and hooked up a mechanical vdo oil gauge from my 951 hoping it's more trustworthy than the sunpro- it read about the same
45 cold idle
52 cold 2k
20 hot idle
44 hot 2k
i also tried shortening the nylon "signal" cord to make sure that wasn't affecting the readings
while driving i didn't see and surges losses or spikes and at this point I don't think the oil pump is a problem.
compression test without wd-40 i got the same numbers.
170ish
170ish
just a hair under 150
170ish
used actron 'professional' kit
next time the truck is warm i'm going to test the pass side for reference and shiggles but heat cycling and running seems to be making it worse, i think testing over and it's time for invasive surgery
I'm going to PM DiscoMike before i start tearing down the top end but my experience tells me it's time to rebuild/build a new motor. I've heard of the automatic transmissions lasting 400k mi in these things with little to no wear (in a vehicle that's never towed anything) on the clutches... too bad the engines don't have the same longevity!
Thinking about building a GEMS block to replace this motor if i find something catastrophic when I tear it down..

update: upon tearing down the motor i've found it was a blown head gasket or leaking liner causing a blown head gasket... see pictures here:
