Engine Whine
It turns out it after spinning everything that it was the 70MM idler pulley thats underneath the alternator and tensioner thats gone bad. I cannot find anyone who has replaced just the bearing successfully. Lots of people talking about doing but no one who actually did it that I could tell. BP of Utah sells the original part for only $26. I guess I will go ahead and replace both and the tensioner pulley. A few more questions.
1) Is the original not metal and do you get a lot quieter with the metal one to be worth ordering this one from Rovah farm.
2) I am assuming the 80mm original is metal and thus the higher cost. BPU sells this one for $50.
3) FInally, I really dont want to wait on parts, is there anyone who has found pulleys locally or succesfully replaced bearing on the 70 mm?

2) replace the bearing, remove the snap ring, hammer out the old bearing with a socket and press in the new one with a socket and vise or c clamp. Install snap ring.
3) the plastic one I removed was made by dayvo. I am sure you can match it up to another pulley on the shelf at a local parts house. Have you looked on their website? Advance auto, autozone and others give you stock status on items.

You should be able to. I think its a 6203 bearing.

Hey there. I think I have an unidentifiable whine too.
New to Land Rover (2000 Disco 2 w/ 110k) but am having a good time learning about it as I go through Mike's major service list. The reason I am posting after spending days/weeks just reading what all you folks talk about is that I notice a metallic high-pitched constant whine overlaying the beautiful sound of the v8 engine. It is 3 min long. It is a noise you can sort of hear starting at 40 sec through the first min and then the fan makes it hard to hear as I get closer, but it gets much clearer at 2:26 - 2:36. At this point the pitch stays that high and consistent. Trust me, in person it is very loud and noticeable. It appears to be near to the alternator or a little lower like near the pulley beneath the alternator. If it is an unfamiliar noise to you, should I remove the belt and see if anything changes or take a different diagnostic approach? Would you recommend I don't drive it until I figure it out?
On a similar note, I have second question. That pulley beneath the alternator has a defect that I am not certain is merely cosmetic or needs immediate attention. The first image (#1098) is probably the better of the three. Notice the spot between 6pm - 10pm is missing a lip. What do you think... deal with it asap?

update: When I got home from work, I pulled the belt off. I spun the alternator and the two pulleys below it. The alternator seemed good and looked like it is the replacement for the recall. The other two didn't sound as 'solid' as the rest of them. The tension pulley made whirling noise and the smaller lower one made a tinging sound. So, I could image at a higher rpm it could be my culprit. I also started the vehicle and with the exception of small tick noise coming from one of the spark plugs (I know which one, because when I upgraded to the bosch platinum +4 the inside boot was full of powder. So need to get new cables... anyway), the offending noise is absent. Going to replace all three like Disco Mike recommends.
update 10/9: I installed the new pulleys and they were the issue.
