everyone with more than 150K on your original LR head gaskets
I don't know about your vehicles but the sides of my heads were noticeably aged and coated with enough grime to look just like the rest of the block.
Now that it has been 25k since my HG job the sides of the heads around the spark plugs still look shiny compared to the block. That might be one way to tell... if the person changing them did indeed get the heads cleaned and or machined in the process. Also when my heads were done the shop did not replace the fabric wrap around the SAI pipes.
Even as the truck ages it should still be evident if the heads have been cleaned and the block not.

Compared to the engine in the jeep I had just put 325K on it looked like gold.. I don't think I even washed the engine in that thing (jeep) but once or twice. I thought maybe the grease and grime was holding it together.
My 1997 DI made it to about 132,000 miles.
My 2001 D2 made it to 92,000 miles when I bought it.
And my D2 had headgaskets replaced once before as the
firewall on the driver's side was bashed in to access the far back
head bolt.
So, someone had redone the heads before. And it looked to have a junkyard head on one side of the motor with a paint marking in it.
So, 2001 d2 had head problems probably 60,000 miles?
Before I owned it.
I guess a carfax would have revealed it.

I am at 230K miles all original engine. Oh yeah, the stealership wanted to replace the head gaskets at 30K under warranty 'cus they said they were leaking slightly. I refused to have them changed. Lasted another 200K, go figure.
TRIARII well to be honest; if I were going to make a 4k treck with my truck and I had 150k miles on it; it would be a question I would ask.
I would then see, that out of over 600 reader of the post, only three responded with get over 150k miles.
And I would base my decision on whether to replace my gaskets on that TYPE information, rather than "go for it, you can do it" support.

Bought the truck with 135k. No signs of recent "engine work". The motor was coated with gunk. I degreased the motor to keep an eye on things and drove it up to 184k until the gaskets developed a slight external leak.
I'll be able to tell tomorrow if the gaskets are factory.
I started tearing the motor down on Friday made it all the way down to the valve covers and realized I misplaced my 8mm 12pt. Doh!
Old Radiator is out, old water pump is off, oil pump is off, and timing gears/chain are coming off tomorrow along with the heads, if I can ever track down that elusive 8mm 12pt.
