230k on 2001 Disco 2 SD. Apparently a small leak has developed in the head gaskets. Unsure as what to do. My worry is that I change the HGs and then the block fails.
the block should not be an issue if you just replace your head gaskets, now if you did a valve job on a 230k mile motor, that would be different.

I think most folks here agree that the D2 engine had more problems than did the D1 models with the same engine! Some folks claim that by the time the D2 models came out, Land Rover tooling was sloppy and the engines bored to much. That said their are probably more computers on the D2 as well. I understand that its possible for a Discovery 2 to reach some high miles without any issues with the head gaskets but it does seem highly unlikely.
Spike Ive always respected you as a person and Ive always appreciated your advice but regarding the matter of "to do or not to do" the head gaskets, oil pump and camshaft and lifters, I have to disagree with you. In a couple months Ill be putting more miles and strain on my D2 than most folks here would dare do with their trucks, so the least I can do is the above mentioned work. Ill feel alot better in the long run once its done. Better to replace these things than a new engine.
Look what happened to Zack Griswold's (ZGPhoto) d2: https://landroverforums.com/forum/pr...art-out-70453/
All the work he put into his truck, and I bet he had some serious advantages being a Rovers North employee and in the end he to delt a blow.... I believe hes found a spare engine to put in the truck but thats my point. I dont have that luxury should my engine crap out.

I noticed that my truck was slowly leaking coolent... but I kept an eye on it... my son was driving my truck out side Boston.. apparently the check engine light came on... he stopped the truck and had it towed to local Land rover dealer( big mistake, but he's only 21 and didn't know better)! He called me and told me what he had done... i went to pick him up from the dealer.... when I got there a manager was there to tell me that it "looked" like a head gasket and that it would cost between $5500- 6800 dollars.... He stated that head gaskets on this model ( 2000 discoveryII), usually only lasted about 60000 miles. My truck had 138,000. he stated that it had prbebly had the gasket s replaced already.. I informed him that I had bought the vehicle new and assured him that they had never been replaced. He stated that he was "sure" that they had been replaced... I really wasnt in a mood to argue.... I had the car towed back to my local mechanic. I ordered a head gasket kit from Rovers north, plugs, plug wires and water pump and timing chain. when it was all said and done I paid $1800.00. The truck runs like it did when I bought it back in 1999. the long and short of this is that my head gaskets lasted about 140,000 miles before being replaced. My friend has a 2004 DII with 101,000 miles and has placed his 3 times.....

141k here on my 02 discovery. After posing my own "when should I replace my head gaskets" question here on this forum, I'm following what sounds like good advice to me and that is to do a better job of eyeballing the fluid levels and generally looking for leaks. This is something I've never been in the habit to do.
I have no long trips scheduled for this winter so I just want to last into spring and then I'll get them done because I want my rover to be able to handle some long road trips with little notice.
In the meantime, I'm going to give the old girl the seafoam treatment this afternoon (never done it before) and see what happens. She's just had a tune-up and is running fine, but my impression is that the seafoam induction is a maintenance item, so off I go.
Just keep on eye on the west coast weather satellite pictures on your local weather channel this afternoon and you should be able to see me...
